Cabled socks

These mid calf socks are the prettiest ones I've ever knitted. Go me! What a way to spend my last week off, knitting these gorgeous things! Starting next week, I'll be the Knitting Commuter again, huzzaah to my new job and 3 hours knitting on the train daily!


This is the time of the year when I spend all my time off knitting stuff for Christmas and these socks are my first gift finished this year. Now all I need to do is wish really hard the people I'm knitting stuff for wont be reading my blog for the next two months.. I mean.. Nobody reads this stuff anyway so I can safely post pics of my pressies without spoiling the surprise.. right??

I'm planning to make a few pairs of these, off-white or darker grey maybe, they turned out so darn cute and am super-excited about this pattern!

Maybe if you are really nice for the rest of the year the next pair will be for you.. remember, Santa and I will be watching you.. right outside your window.. 24/7.

Easiest Scarf Ever

This scarf is so simple a blind handless monkey could make one.

Yarn: Novita 7 veljestä  (150 g = 300 m, 75% wool / 25% polyamide)

Gauge: 18 st = 10cm

Needle: 3½ mm

Just cast on about 350 on circular needles, knit for about 15-20cm and cast off loosely.

Mitten mania!

These are a pair of mittens I made for my bf.

The pattern for these really simple mittens is by Novita and available in Finnish.

Novita Mittens.

Yarn: Novita 7 veljestä (150 g = 300 m, 75% wool / 25% polyamide)

Gauge: 18 st = 10cm

Skeins: 0,5 skeins per colour

Needle: 3½ mm

Girly Cardigan

Here's something I started working on this tuesday.. It's a little girl's cardigan, size 104cm and the pattern is my own modification. I wont post up the instructions yet as I'm not finished and have no idea will it turn out the way I planned :)

Lacy scarf & cap

I'm starting to repeat myself but I'm Totally in love with this yarn!
So soft, so lovely..

Here's another set I made few weeks back..

As inspired by lacy scarf by Novita

Yarn: Novita Katri (100g = 160m, 100% acrylic)

Gauge: 14 st = 10cm

Skeins: 0,8 for the hat and roughly 1,2 for the scarf

Needle: 5mm

I used 29 stiches for the scarf and 112 for a loose fitted hat and just repeated the extremely simple pattern. 

Begin the cap with 3 rows of *K1, P1* and decrease when you feel like it ;)

 I decreased the stitches simply by not doing all the YOs on the pattern as I got to the desired height. I only did 4 YOs out of 6 on the first row, then 2 out of 6 on the pattern, etc.. easy-peasy!


I must say, if I had to do this hat again, I'd probably start of with maybe 90 stitches for the K1P1 and add the rest on the last layer, the hat is rather loose.. But it's not too loose so I wont re-do it.

Excuse me, miss..

I was at the supermarket last night lookin for some poppers for the baby pants (almost finished, hoot hoot!). Maybe it was my beautifully hand knitted scarf that gave me away, or maybe just the absolutely deranged smile on my face I get while facing a whole wall full of yarn, what ever the reason was, while drooling over the lovely stocks of colourful wool I heard a deep male voice beside me saying "Excuse me miss, you look like an expert knitter.." and before he could ask me how many skeins of yarn would it take to knit a pair of socks for the teen ager behind him (who was Like, SO, embarrassed! as all teen agers are when their parents talk to strangers between shelves full of wool) I was already hovering over the shelves with joy. Somebody thinks I look like an expert knitter!! While still airborne, I took a look at the skein he was holding and like the expert I am, told him. "Two, but if you pick this other sort you will be fine with just one". My god. I'm an expert!

Wooly baby pants

A friend of mine asked me to knit her a pair of wooly baby pants. She picked up an example for a pattern for me and I made some modifications to it and this is what I came up with:

 

Yarn: Novita Wool (150 g = 135 m, 100% wool)

Gauge: 23 st = 10cm

Skeins: 3

Needle: 3mm and 3,5mm

Right leg:
Cast on 52 and divide on smaller (3mm) double ended needles. Work as circular knit. *Knit 1 Purl 1* for 3cm. On the last row add 10 stitches = 62.

Change to size 3.5mm needles and begin the cable pattern as follows: Knit 8s, knit the cable pattern according to the chart, knit 37. Add 1stich at the beginning of 1^st and 1 at the end of 4^th needle first every 6^th row for 4 times, then every 4^th row for 8 times = 86 stiches. After knitting 21cm cast off at beginning of 1^st needle and end of 4^th needle:  1x4, 1x2 and 2x1 every second row = 70 stiches.  

"Cross 3 to right" = Slip 3st on cable needle and hold in back; knit 3; knit 3 from cable needle
"Cross 3 to left" = Slip 3st on cable needle and hold in front; knit 3, knit 3 from cable needle

Left leg:
Knit the left leg as a mirror image to right leg.

Crotch: After finishing both legs take them both on a circular needle = 140s. Continue the cable patterns on the front. When the crotch part is 17cm long, change back to smaller needles, *knit 1 purl 1* for 6cm. Cast off.

Finishing:
Sow the crotch seams. Knit 2 straps: Cast on 9. *K1, P1* for 24cm. Sow on the straps on at the back and attach the poppers on the front side.

Leafy scarf & cap

Totally in love with this Novita Katri yarn at the moment, it's 100% acrylic and oh so very soft!

Yarn: Novita Katri (100g = 160m, 100% acrylic)

Gauge: 14 st = 10cm

Skeins: 0,8 for the hat and roughly 2,2 for the scarf

Needle: 5mm

Scarf: Cast on 32. Work according to the pattern below repeating rows 1-16. When you have reached the desired lenght for your scarf cast off. 

Cap: Cast on 90. Devide on 4 double pointed needles or circular needles. Knit 1 purl 1 for the first 3-5 rows. Begin the pattern repeating the 10 stitches on the chart. After you've knitted the 16 layers on the pattern once begin the decrease as per Pic 2. With the remaining 18 stitches knit 2 together until you are left with 9. Cut yarn, leaving a 15cm tail. Draw tail through the last stitches, draw tightly closed, and fasten on inside of cap. Weave in ends.

"Tunturineule" scarf & cap

I've been trying to figure out, what on earth is Tunturineule in English, I've found very helpful Finnish-English knitting translations from http://www.katajala.net/marjut/neuleet/sanasto.shtml and other sites and found them very helpful in getting started. But this "tunturineule" remains a mystery, if anyone knows what it is in English, tell me!! EDIT: An anonymous reader suggested moss knit rib. Care to comment?

But here's the instructions for this chunky set anyhow:

Gauge: 14 st = 10cm

Scarf: Cast on 35. Knit according to the pattern below until you've reached the desired length. Cast off.

EDIT 11.1.2011:

To clarify the chart: there is 4 stitches on the rib that are repeated plus when knitting the scarf you'll need 1 extra stitch for right edge and 2st for left edge. When knitting the cap leave out the stitches outside the red lines here.

Cap: Cast on 94. Devide on 4 double pointed needle, 23 each. Begin decrease after 13cm. Decrease by 4 on every second row at the end of each needle. When you've reached top of the hat, about 18cm, *knit 2 together* until you have 8 stiches remaining. Cut yarn, leaving a 15cm tail. Draw tail through the last stitches, draw tightly closed, and fasten on inside of cap. Weave in ends.
